At Golcar Junior, Infant and Nursery School, we believe that learning goes far beyond the classroom. Our wide range of extracurricular activities offers students the opportunity to explore their passions, develop new skills, and build lasting friendships. Whether it’s through sports, arts, music or leadership programs we encourage every student to discover their interests and reach their full potential. These activities help foster teamwork, creativity, and confidence—qualities that prepare our students for success in every area of life.
Sporting Opportunities
We believe that physical education and outdoor learning are essential parts of a well-rounded education. Our programmes are designed to inspire teamwork, confidence, and a lifelong love of being active — both on the field and in the great outdoors.

Our skilled sports coaches lead a wide range of activities that help our children develop fitness, coordination, and resilience, while encouraging healthy competition and personal growth. Our after school club offer includes tennis, football, Wildcats, Little Bikers, Mini-Bops and Forest School. Through our partnership with the Pennine Sport Partnership, children benefit from being able to take part in tournaments, and are able to access exciting local sporting events.
Adventure plays a key role in our curriculum too. We love to provide unique experiences, such as hiring climbing walls and caving facilities, that build courage, problem-solving skills, and determination in a safe, supportive setting.
We also offer enriching Forest School opportunities, where pupils learn hands-on outdoor skills, connect with nature, and develop teamwork and independence. From woodland exploration to environmental projects, Forest School sessions help children grow in confidence while discovering the wonders of the natural world.
Together, these opportunities make Golcar JIN a place where every child can explore, achieve, and thrive — both indoors and out.
Music
We believe that every student should have the opportunity to explore their musical talents, whether through singing, instrumental performance, composition, or appreciation. Our vibrant music program offers a wide range of opportunities — from classroom learning to choirs, ensembles (including Samba band and guitar club), whole class experience sessions and school productions.
We are proud to have a musician in residence, who brings professional experience, inspiration, and expert guidance to our children. Working alongside teachers and learners, our Musician in Residence provides opportunities for our children to perform and collaborate regularly such as in assemblies and at school fairs, as well as at the Kirkees Primary Music Festival at the Huddersfield Town Hall.
Our Leadership Groups
At Golcar JIN, we believe every child has the power to lead, contribute, and make a difference. Our wide range of pupil leadership and enrichment groups give children opportunities to share their voices, develop new skills, and take an active role in shaping our school community. Our current offer includes the following:
- Local Democracy Ambassadors – Celebrate our local community, meet with councillors, and raise awareness about democracy.
- Eco Club – Promote environmental awareness and sustainability through hands-on projects that protect our planet.
- PPTFA Leadership Group – Work alongside the PTFA to plan events, gather pupil feedback, and help decide how funds are spent in school.
- Speak Up (Oracy Group) – Develop confidence and communication skills through the four strands of oracy: clarity, command, content, and confidence.

- Culture Club – Celebrate diversity by planning themed events, assemblies, and activities that highlight different cultures and traditions.
- Microbit & AI Leadership Groups – Explore coding, robotics, and artificial intelligence to develop digital literacy and creative problem-solving skills.
- Happiness Heroes – Support mental health and wellbeing across school as My Happy Mind ambassadors.
- Music Leadership Group – Share ideas to enhance our music curriculum and help shape performance opportunities and musical experiences.
- PlayLeaders – Organise fun, active games for younger pupils at lunchtimes, promoting teamwork and active play.
- Year 6 Responsibility Roles – Our oldest pupils take pride in supporting the smooth running of school life. From being library monitors and office helpers to supporting assemblies and younger classes, these pupils act as positive role models and demonstrate responsibility, reliability, and leadership.
Through these groups, pupils learn valuable life skills — from communication and creativity to leadership and responsibility — preparing them to thrive both in school and beyond.
